An Introduction to Full and Fruity Reds
The full and fruity red wine style is one loved by many and can be found all across the globe. The best full and fruity reds will be ripe and bold, but not quite as harsh when it comes to tannins (which is why we describe them as big wines, not huge…). They’ll be packed full of red and black fruit flavours, and likely to have come into contact with oak at some point, meaning you’ll experience deliciously elegant spicy notes of vanilla.
Where Can You Find Full and Fruity Reds?
This particular wine style covers a large variety of grapes and countries, so it’s hard to define this style by a certain region. Although, typically, this term refers to the likes of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Grenache, Syrah and Barbera (think dark and juicy!).
Although you can find fantastic examples of this style in the south of France, Spain and Italy, it’s the New World where this style really comes into its own, thanks to the warmer climate. The hot weather vines enjoy in Chile, Argentina, Australia and South Africa result in intensified fruit flavours – and these are usually jammy fruit flavours rather than notes of fresh fruit.
What to Pair with Full and Fruity Reds
Of course, the flavour profile varies depending on the grape, but common flavours include plum, redcurrant, blackcurrant and blueberry. Occasionally you’ll find raisin, cherry, chocolate and liquorice from those hot climate regions.
A perfect example of a full and fruity wine would be a Chilean Carmenère. Medium to full-bodied with medium acidity and tannins, it’s fruity and bold while being light enough to have a texture that’s silky and smooth.
It pairs wonderfully with red meat dishes – especially lamb with mint sauce or a good old fashioned lasagne. It’s also a great match for a strong and stinky cheeseboard and a great addition to any barbecue!
