The title is an equation we can all work out, according to recent research, drinking wine while exercising regularly can have some fantastic health benefits. While drinking wine on its own did not appreciably affect cholesterol, blood glucose or levels of inflammatory markers. It also did not appreciably damage peoples livers based on liver function-tests.
However it was discovered that the combination of moderate wine drinking plus regular exercise improves markers of Atherosclerosis. There was a significant improvement in cholesterol levels after one year of drinking red or white wine. So no longer are the benefits of wine restricted to just the red wine drinkers, you can now lower your cholesterol while sipping on a Chardonnay.
Lead researcher Miloš Táborský, head of cardiology at the Palacky University in the Czech Republic commented:
Our current study shows that the combination of moderate wine drinking plus regular exercise improves markers of atherosclerosis,” said Táborský, “suggesting that this combination is protective against cardiovascular disease.”
This study focused on people who drank moderately throughout the week, a glass or two a night and exercised twice a week. However of course it’s all about drinking the right amounts, managing the rest of your diet effectively and ensuring a healthy dose of exercise. However this bit of research is just a drop in the ocean of investigating the health benefits of wine and alcohol in general.
However as someone who drinks wine on a regular basis and exercises a couple of times a week, this was rather good news! To read more about the research, please click HERE
