Wine Reviews

A number of our wines were featured in the press during the Autumn months and today I am going to share them with you here.

Terry Kirby writing in The Independent featured our Odfjell Old Vine Carignan 2011 in his Wine of the Week column as a perfect match for Sunday Lunch.  “Warming and satisfying, made from old Carignan vines in Chile’s Maule Valley, there are fresh black cherry fruits mingling with tastes of leather, vanilla and a hint of chocolate, all of which linger on the palate for a long time” he wrote.

Meanwhile, in the October edition of the Sheffield Profile Magazine, Richard Marsden reviewed a number of our wines, including our Domaine Andre Brunel Viognier 2012. “The juicy, gooseberry aroma when cracking open this wine mixes with tropical fruits and some citrus on the palate, which is soft and rounded” he said.

Both Richard, in the November edition of the Profile Magazine, and Mike Tipping of the York Press reviewed The Black Pig Pinot Grigio.  Mike said, “Clean-tasting and crunchy, it suggests citrus, green apple and pear fruit flavours, with floral notes and minerals”, while Richard wrote “Here’s a wine with bright aromas of honey and pineapple, some vanilla and honeysuckle sweetness”.  He finished, “A refreshing, lingering palate on which sweetness is balanced by lemon freshness”.

Sam Wylie Harris, whose articles feature in a number of regional papers, described our Soave Classico Staforte Pra 2010 as “utterly delicious” in her article on Italy’s food-friendly vino.  In the same article she said that our Il Cascinone Rive Barbera 2011 was “beautifully structured” and that the “barbera fruit rewards the palate with velvety smooth black cherry and forest fruit flavours balanced by supple tannins and a long, lingering finish”.

In her subsequent article about Organic wine, Sam recommended our Gulfi Nerobaronj 2005, describing it as “Enough to make you want to kiss the Sicilian soil.”

In the Gourmet Supplement of House and Garden Magazine, Joanna Simon focused on grapes that wouldn’t have previously got a look in but are now trumpeted on labels.  She highlighted the Godello grape and recommended our Atalaya do Mar Godello 2010 as good example, while encouraging readers to try our Pasion de Bobal 2011 for the Bobal grape.

Paula Goddard writing for Mature Times also liked the Atalaya do Mar Godello 2010, so much so that she included it in her “Top Ten White Wines of 2013”.

Jacqui Morely in The Blackpool Gazette picked out our Finca Manzanos Doncella Roja 2012 describing it as “one of Virgin’s must tries”. She goes on to say that the winery is “one of the most daring, and yet it never puts a foot wrong.”

Finally, the Birds with Bottle ladies enjoyed our Bodegas Hildago La Gitana en Rama NV as an aperitif, describing it as “exciting” and encouraged people who wouldn’t normally drink sherry to give it a go
