Festival Of Wine: Laurent Espinasse

Laurent Espinasse is one of the hottest young winemakers in the Rhône and thanks to having worked with him for many years now; we get the inside track on all the finest wines coming out of the vineyards at Vinsobres. You can never have too much of a good thing and having received an exclusive new wine for our customers, it gives us the perfect chance to explain what makes Laurent so good at what he does.

We’ve created the festival of wine to celebrate the relationship we have with winemakers who create astounding wines for the love of the craft. Supporting these winemakers allow them to do what they do best, and at the end of the day we get to pass the wines on to you, everybody wins. Most of the wines we supply are exclusive to ourselves and with over 1 million ratings on the site; we work closely with winemakers to produce the wine we know you love.

Laurent is in a privileged position having taken over his father’s vineyards while continuing to maintain his own. We say taken over, he nabbed the best grapes from each vineyard to combine them into a super wine, exclusive for us. Laurent is a nice chap, but we like to think he stalked over the fences in the dead of the night, swag bag in hand, cutters at the ready.

On day one we’re focusing in on the Galets Roules Cotes du Rhone 2014, on offer today and exclusive to Virgin Wines customers.

The grapes come from vines planted at 300m altitude on truly exceptional land in the shadows of Mont Ventoux. Underneath the ground the roots drive deep into the calcaire (limestone) soils whilst the surface is covered with pudding stones (galets), the very same stones that are synonymous with Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

“I am really happy with the wines from the 2014 vintage, which for many was a really difficult one. Our vineyards, thankfully escaped the torrential rains during harvest which was a huge relief, allowing us to bring very healthy grapes into the winery at peak ripeness”

This is a blend of 85% Grenache and 15% Syrah, producing a full-bodied wine, with heaps of raspberry, dark fruit and a peppery kick. Similarities can be made between this wine and a true Châteauneuf-du-Pape, making it both balanced and approachable. It may be young right now, but this wine will age with grace and evolve to show morello cherry and backcurrent jam notes.

“The Syrah, from some higher altitude vineyards, is full of red berry fruit, richly concentrated and fleshy with plenty of balancing freshness”

We pride ourselves on working with people who want to bring out the true personality of the grape, a hands off approach when it comes to the true flavours coming to the forefront. Winemakers we work with are always on the cutting edge of technology, but altering the true expression of the wine with additives and preservatives is never an option. Laurent works with organically certified vineyards and vines throughout, letting nature take centre stage.

“This is the first year I’ve year I’ve been working with our new oenologue Emmanuel Gagnepain, who is helping progress our approach in both vineyard and winery. Emmanuel is a top name in the field of organic viticulture and has a natural approach in the winery, where together we’ve introduced natural yeasts for fermentation and the wines are bottled with no fining or filtration”

Laurent Espinasse’s Galets Roules Cotes Du Rhone 2014 is a creation that we’re very excited about. We love working with Laurent and his approach to winemaking mirrors what we and our customers love.
