Christmas Sparkle

Sparkling wines have become more of an everyday affair in recent times, especially with the increase in popularity of fizz, like Prosecco. This is partly because they are affordable but, sparkling wines are still the pièce de résistance when it comes to celebrations. And there are very few more special occasions in the calendar year than Christmas Day! It’s entirely up to you which sparkling route you go down whether it is Cava Crescent, Cerement de Loire Lane, Champagne Alley or Prosecco Parade, to name but a few. It really will add a little bit of additional magic, or as the French would say je ne sais quoi to your day.

At Virgin Wines we’ve got a great range to cover all bases – here are a few personal highlights…

Baumard Carte Turquoise Cremant de Loire NV
Crafted by the affable Florent Baumard, this ‘Champagne method’ French fizz is a belter. A sensational drop laced with pear, apple, lemon, flowers and spices. Plus plenty of finesse too.

Champagne Bollinger Special Cuvee Brut NV
Fuller in style than many, Bolli is a personal favourite and will be making an appearance on my Christmas Day without fail. A little tip from me would be to buy yourself a few bottles and tuck it away for a few years. The additional bottle age really takes this thing to the next level, increasing the biscuity goodness this Champagne House is famed for.

Laurent Perrier Brut NV
In contrast to Bollinger the house style of Laurent Perrier is all about the clean and crisp. No less appealing and a top-choice if you prefer your fizz to be that little bit lighter. Green apple freshness and zippy citrus fruits abound. Brilliant!

Le Dolci Colline Prosecco NV
Our top-selling bubbly of all time and holding a rating of 4.4* this classic Italian number is the business. With oodles of apple and peach on the nose and an interesting, soft finish. At this price it’s an everyday sparkler that can also rise to the class of a special event!

Tempus III Cava Brut NV
Afforded the same 2nd fermentation in bottle given to the best Champagnes, Cava is where the smart money’s at. It has plenty of ripe fruit and classic biscuit and brioche notes thanks entirely to ‘Méthode Champenoise’!

Cloudy Bay Pelorus NV
From legendary Kiwi winery Cloudy Bay, Pelorus is their release to rival the best sparklers out there. Classic apple and lemon aromas and a ‘bready’ note derived from two years sat on its lees. Also truly great value at under 20 quid a bottle!

I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and all the best for 2013.
